How does Condition Based Service decide when my BMW needs service?
Condition Based Service is BMW's approach to maintenance: rather than a fixed schedule, the vehicle monitors its own components and driving conditions and reports each service item as it comes due, in the vehicle display. Engine oil, brake pads, brake fluid, the cabin microfilter, and the vehicle check each carry their own status. When one comes due, the car tells you, and that is the moment to schedule. Because the intervals reflect how and where the car is driven, two identical BMWs can call for service at different times. Nalley BMW of Decatur performs the items your BMW calls for and resets the service indicator when the work is complete.
What does a BMW engine oil service include?
An engine oil service replaces the engine oil with the grade specified for your BMW and installs a new oil filter. The service indicator is reset, and the visit includes a complimentary multi-point inspection so you know the condition of the brakes, tires, fluids, and battery before you leave. BMW engines, including turbocharged engines, depend on the correct oil specification for lubrication and cooling, which is why the dealership uses the oil BMW specifies rather than a generic grade. Details, including the BMW Oil Change Plan, are on our oil change page.
Why does BMW brake fluid need to be replaced?
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time. As the water content rises, the fluid's boiling point drops and the brake pedal can feel softer under hard use, which matters on a car built to be driven. Your BMW reports brake fluid service as its own Condition Based Service item. The service replaces the fluid throughout the system and bleeds the brakes, and the technician inspects the pads and rotors at the same time. Brake pad and rotor replacement, when needed, is covered on our brake service page.
When do cabin and engine filters need replacing?
The cabin microfilter cleans the air coming into the interior through the climate system; the engine air filter cleans the air the engine breathes. Both clog gradually with pollen, dust, and road grit, which in the Atlanta area means a heavy spring pollen load every year. A clogged cabin filter reduces airflow and lets odors through; a clogged engine filter restricts the engine. Your BMW reports the microfilter as a Condition Based Service item, and the engine filter is checked during the multi-point inspection. Both are replaced with Original BMW Parts. Details are on our filter service page.
How is a BMW battery tested and replaced?
A battery test checks the battery's condition under load, not only its resting voltage. Slow cranking, warning messages about the electrical system, or a car that has sat for weeks are the usual reasons to test. When replacement is needed, the technician installs the battery type specified for your vehicle and completes the work so the vehicle's electrical system recognizes the new battery. Battery testing is included in the multi-point inspection at every service visit. Details are on our battery page.
What do tire and alignment services cover?
Tire service covers inspection, rotation where your BMW's tire specification allows it, and replacement with tires approved for the vehicle. Four-wheel alignment sets the suspension angles to BMW specification so the car tracks straight and the tires wear evenly; it is worth checking after a pothole, a curb strike, or when the steering wheel sits off-center. Tire wear is measured during the multi-point inspection at every service visit, so you will know when replacement is coming. Details are on our tire and alignment pages.
What happens during a BMW diagnostic test?
A diagnostic test reads the vehicle's control modules with BMW diagnostic equipment to trace a concern to its source. Modern BMWs carry many control modules beyond the engine: transmission, chassis, body electrical, climate, and driver assistance systems each store their own fault codes. A generic code reader sees only the engine emissions codes. BMW diagnostic equipment traces concerns beyond the engine to their source, including intermittent electrical concerns and warning messages. You receive the findings and a written estimate before any repair, and nothing is performed without your authorization. Check engine light details are on our check engine light page.
How do I check my BMW for open recalls?
A recall is a safety-related repair performed at no charge to the owner. Ask us to check for open recalls on your VIN at any visit, or look up your VIN on our vehicle recall information page. If a recall applies, the repair can be scheduled with your regular service so it takes one trip.
